Joe Gatewood

Mr. Gatewood (Joe) is an attorney with over 30 years of experience in health policy.  He currently serves as a Vice President in AdvaMed’s Global Department.  He has held prior positions in private law practice and within the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).  At HHS he worked on behalf of the Office of the Secretary to address program litigation issues and also conducted investigations into health care quality and payment issues as a Senior Counsel for the HHS Office of Inspector General.

Joe initially came to AdvaMed as a member of its (US) Payment Department.  During his time there, Joe led AdvaMed’s efforts on hospital inpatient reimbursement, DRG reform, competitive bidding, and issues affecting the wound care and orthopedic sectors.

In his current role, Joe oversees AdvaMed’s policy work on EU and UK issues, including AdvaMed’s work on MDR and IVDR implementation.  Joe also leads on policy engagement on Korea and on Global Reimbursement and Procurement, where he led AdvaMed’s work with the World Bank on value-based procurement.  Joe also manages AdvaMed’s engagement in patient and industry advocacy in the UK and Germany.  He has had the pleasure to work with BVMed in a leadership capacity to co-manage their Lander advocacy program, Fortschritt er Leben.  Joe has also had the pleasure to serve in a leadership capacity for more than 12 years for the Medical Technology Group (MTG) a unique patient-industry advocacy partnership in the UK that includes patient groups, AdvaMed and ABHI.
